Choosing car seat covers: fit, material and safety

Auto Interieur Meester· 3 min read

Buying seat covers looks like a minor purchase, until you see the difference between a set drawn around your seat and a set that merely hangs over it. Fit, material and safety together decide whether you will be happy with them for years. Below we go through the choices in the order in which they actually matter.

Fit: universal or made to measure

Universal covers fit many seats, and for that reason fit no seat exactly. They are cheaper and widely usable, but they pull out of shape as you get in and out, and the seams never sit where they should.

Model-specific covers are designed per car and per seat version: the openings for headrests, armrests, belts and adjustment levers are where they belong. That costs a little more, but the cover stays taut and the interior keeps looking like an interior rather than like fabric draped over one.

With us you pick your car and see straight away which sets are made for it — browse all car seat covers or start with your make and model.

Material: what to look for

  • Polyester and textile — hard-wearing, pleasant to use and the most popular choice. A good balance between price and lifespan.
  • Artificial leather (PU/skai) — a premium look, and clean with a damp cloth. Handy with children and pets.
  • Neoprene-type fabrics — water-repellent, suited to wet sportswear, work clothing or dog hair.
  • Cotton and canvas — soft and breathable, but more prone to staining.
  • Mesh and open weaves — breathable in summer, less protection against moisture.

How do you use your car?

An honest answer to that question decides the material:

  • Family with children — choose something you can take off; child seats and drinks cups ask for it.
  • Dog in the back — go for hard-wearing and sturdy; hair and claws are the real test.
  • High mileage — comfort and a breathable material matter more than looks.
  • Work van or company car — a tough weave that stands up to work clothes, and quick to swap.
  • Mainly about looks — a made-to-measure set in artificial leather with contrasting stitching.

Style and appearance

Colour does more to an interior than you would expect. A black set with blue or red stitching looks sporty; beige and light grey make a cab feel roomier and calmer. Our ranges differ most on exactly that point: have a look at the AID range, the AIE range and the AIS range to see the difference in stitching and texture.

Safety: airbags, seat belts and seat heating

This is where you should not compromise. If there is a side airbag in the backrest, the cover has to leave that seam free or be made with a tear seam, so the airbag can deploy unhindered. The same goes for belts that come out of the seat itself and for adjustment levers: they have to stay usable once the cover is fitted. Seat heating works through a cover, but thick, insulating fabrics let the warmth through more slowly.

Not sure whether a set suits your seat version? Every product page has a fit check, and you can send a photo of your seat for personal advice.

Choosing the right set

Start with your car, then pick the material that matches how you use it, and look at colour last. Want to see what fitting involves before you decide? Our installation manuals have videos and documents per range. And if you get stuck, just ask — we know these seats.
